Why is this day important? International women’s day is a day where we celebrate all the achievements of women that have changed our societies for the better. We celebrate all the ‘economic, cultural and political achievements’ and voice ways in which we can keep pushing for gender equality.
The theme for this year’s international women’s day is ‘choosing to challenge’. The organisers have said “A challenged world, is an alert world”.
Throughout history women have echoed this message by choosing to challenge and break boundaries so that other women can have the rights and freedoms that they have today.
Political activist and organiser of the suffragette movement, Emmeline Pankhurst once said “I would rather be a rebel than a slave.”
Because of her contribution to the suffragette movement in the 19th century, women in the UK now have the right to vote.
Today, women are still pushing boundaries! Activist Sasha Johnson not only delivers food parcels every Wednesday to those in need but also actively speaks up against injustices in her community. She is passionate about making a difference in her community and will stop and no lengths to see it happen.
Claudia Webbe is also a woman breaking boundaries, she is a British politician who uses her platform to speak out against injustice and raise awareness to the issues that matter.
Let us change for the better! This day is also a reminder that we still have a long way to go to achieve equality for women all around the world. Use the hashtag to show how you ‘#ChooseToChallenge’.
